In our opening chapter, we include essays reflecting on the civic-university movement and Bob Kerslake’s legacy. The authors explore lessons from the great civic moments in the past and what they mean for the civic-university agenda in the 21st century.
We learn about ways in which universities can better steer their civic role to meet the wants and needs of the public, we consider the impact of the Civic University Commission and what needs to change now, and we examine Lord Kerslake’s substantial legacy in Sheffield and how the universities and local authority are working in partnership to support the city’s future.
